Beginnings - Tabitha's Team Turns 1
>> Tuesday, May 25, 2010
Today is a special day for me. On May 25, 2009, I filed the charter to start Tabitha's Team Inc. Plans for tabithas-team.com began, and the first pages went live in June 2009.
The idea for Tabitha's Team began in 2008 on a little blog started about a subject that I did not want to deal with.
As I felt the urge to write, I prayed for direction.
The answer? Write about Proverbs 31.
This began my argument with God.
I reminded him that Proverbs 31 teaching and analysis has been done and overdone. We're all tired of reading it. I told him that I just couldn't see where a new contribution could be made.
The answer? Write about Proverbs 31.
I was determined to prove my case, so I invited God to sit down with me as I visited Amazon and showed him how many books had been written on this subject.
I was right; there was no shortage of opinion and instruction written on this popular chapter.
Then I started reading the reviews.
The heartbreak that poured out of the book reviews was obvious. Women were overwhelmed, angry, frustrated, and depressed about a standard that they could not live up to.
Somewhere in our journey we have taken the grace and the relationship with the Lord out of our Proverbs 31 picture and created a model to immitate.
We might as well be hanging the latest fashion model poster up on the wall.
I began to see the shape and direction that God was giving. Throw out the perfectionism and quit judging each other. Why? Because he has more important work for us to do. He needs servants who are not so absorbed with the poster on the wall. He needs women who are committed to him and his purpose.
He needs disciples.
Later, God led me to Tabitha, the disciple mentioned briefly in Acts 9:36. We don't know much about her. We do know that she was important enough for Peter to leave his post immediately, come to Tabitha's side, and raise her from the dead.
We don't have a magical domestic tale about Tabitha. We do know that she was always doing good and serving the poor and the widows. She must not have been preoccupied with the poster on the wall.
Tabitha needs a team of women who follow her example.

Happy Birthday to Tabitha's team :) I'm glad to see someone else is thinking along the same lines as myself when it comes to Proverbs 31 and rather than creating an impossible standard to live up to see her as a woman who loved God and her family to the best of her ability.
