Dressing Up God to Make the Sale

Only in the West has the heretical notion that God will protect us from all harm really taken root.

-Mike Erre, The Jesus of Suburbia

I worked in sales in various industries for over 12 years. I have seen my fair share of people embellishing the truth to make a sale.

However, nothing embarrasses me more than when we embellish, tame, or "dress up" Jesus to sell him to our neighbor.

I don't think it is always intentional. We have let this idea creep into our culture that we become Christians to get a better life.

Don't misunderstand me; there is no greater joy than knowing Jesus as your savior. But joy and comfort are not the same thing.

We should never tell our neighbor that their life will get better if they will just trust Jesus. It is more likely that the opposite is true; Satan does need to pay much attention to you until you decide to exercise faith.

Jesus is good enough without our sales talk - no, he is perfect.

He may not take away all of your troubles, but he will stand by you and give you strength and hope. He will walk with you through every step.

When we realize the greatness of our redemption and how big our God really is, anything that comes our way is seen with new perspective.

Life may not get easier, but we will know that our broken relationship with God is now fixed. The guilt that we once had and did not understand is replaced with grace and love.

That is the reason we give our lives to Jesus.

Are We Supposed to be Arguing for Jesus or Serving Him?

>> Tuesday, October 27, 2009

There is a passion for souls that does not spring from God, but from the desire to make converts to our point of view.

-Oswald Chambers

I doubt that good debate ever saved one soul. But Chambers is right; we are often guilty of trying to convince people about Jesus instead of introducing them to Jesus.

We think it's all about us. We want to be right.

When we think this way, we actually get in the way of anyone seeing Jesus in us at all. Truth is not relative. Truth is truth, but it rings empty without love.

Are we supposed to be arguing for Jesus or serving him?

I am an arguer by nature. I love to debate. I am very guilty of losing the eyes of Jesus for the sake of proving him right.

When it comes to doing his work, serving others, I am usually timid and second-guess everything. It should be so much more pleasing to serve.

But I guess our enemy wants us to feel differently. He wants us to feel really good about blowing hot air so that we stay out of the business of being hands and feet. When we decide to reach out in love, he will always make us feel afraid.

Overbearing.

Not good enough.

It's much more comfortable to throw bombs and duck for cover under my apologetics than to stand in the midst of an evil world and offer love.

I'm not even sure that I always know how; but I don't think that is an excuse.

What about you?

Have you struggled with your motives in telling people about Jesus? Have you found an effective way to serve?

Call for the Wailing Women to Come

>> Monday, October 26, 2009

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

Consider now! Call for the wailing women to come;
send for the most skillfull of them.
Let them come quickly
and wail over us
till our eyes overflow with tears
and water streams from our eyelids.

The sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
'How ruined we are!
How great is our shame!
We must leave our land
because our houses are in ruins.'

Now, O women, hear the word of the Lord;
open your ears to the words of his mouth.
Teach your daughters how to wail;
teach one another a lament.

Jeremiah 9:17-20

This is the scripture my local team and I are using to pray for the Arise, Cry Out! event. What a beautiful picture of God specifically calling women to cry out in prayer for their community.

He calls their wailing skillful.

He tell us to teach our daughters to wail.

We need women who are skillful in prayer to join us in crying out for our children and the children of our communities. We need "daughters" who desire to pray and don't know how to come so that they can be taught.

Will you wail with us on November 14th?

Pumpkin Prayer

>> Friday, October 23, 2009

Today we are carving pumpkins. This is a popular Pumpkin Prayer. I wanted to share it for those of you who are getting ready to do the same:

Dear God,
As I carve my pumpkin help me say this prayer:

Open my mind so I can learn about You;
(Cut the top of the pumpkin)

Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do.
(Clean out the inside)

Open my eyes so Your love I will see;
(Cut the eyes)

I'm so sorry for turning up my nose to all you've given me.
(Cut a the nose)

Open my ears so your word I will hear.
(Cut the ears)

Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near
(cut the mouth)

Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen.
(Place a candle inside and light it)

Have a great weekend!

692645: Sacred Friendships - Celebrating the Legacy of Women Heroes of the Faith Sacred Friendships - Celebrating the Legacy of Women Heroes of the Faith

By Robert W Kellemen & Susan M Ellis / B M H Books

This book is a "must read" for Christian women.

I laughed, I cried...I was humbled.

In a time when women's ministry is often synonymous with brunch and chocolate, we can all learn from the women in Sacred Friendships.

The wisdom, boldness, perseverance, love, and sacrifice displayed by these female heroes will make you want to put down that latte and get to work in the body of Christ.

This historical narrative presents the stories over 50 women and covers 2000 years of church history. The authors allow these women to shine their own light through their letters, diaries, and other writings. We also hear the words of those who were influenced by their faith.

These women teach us to balance life and doctrine, humble care and bold courage, content and character. They speak the truth in love. They teach, counsel, and encourage others through their words and through their actions.

The list of heroes includes mothers and sisters of the saints. It includes martyrs and deaconesses, wives of famous pastors, and women who quietly instructed and discipled followers in their rural homes. You will hear from women who boldly spoke out against and debated male leaders during the Great Western Schism, the Reformation, and the road to Emancipation. There are stories of those who endured slavery and those who fought against slavery. The book ends in a Nazi prison camp, where the faith of one woman encouraged and influenced those around her.

Diversity among the women in Sacred Friendships affirms that all women can serve in God's kingdom. These women were married, single, and widowed. They included women of high position and political influence, peasants, prisoners, and slaves. Some were mothers and some never had children. All of them lived authentic lives of faith.

I am grateful to authors Bob Kellemen and Susan Ellis of RPM Ministries for including me on their blog tour.

I asked Bob:

Tell us about your speaking, writing, and consulting through RPM Ministries.

Bob: "I believe that most Christians care deeply, but struggle to speak the truth in love. RPM Ministries exists to equip lay people, pastors, educators, students, and Christian counselors to change lives with Christ’s changeless truth. We do so by speaking, writing, and consulting about Christ-centered, comprehensive, compassionate, and culturally-informed biblical counseling and spiritual formation.

Our passion is to empower the church and para-church to care like Christ. As a result, God’s people enter deeply into one another’s lives and make a significant different in the lives of hurting and hardened people.

RPM is our acrostic for Resurrection Power Multipliers. We based the concept upon Paul’s prayer in Philippians 3:10, “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering.”

We want to raise up a new generation of biblical counselors and spiritual friends who live out 1 Thessalonians 2:8. “I loved you so much that I gave you not only the Scriptures, but my own soul, because you were dear to me.”

How can people get in touch with you and how can they learn more about your ministry and about Sacred Friendships?

I can be contacted by email at: rpm.ministries@gmail.com

Making Faith Your Personal Possession

>> Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Let me say I believe God will supply all my need, and then let me run dry, with no outlook, and see whether I will go through the trial of faith, or whether I will sink to something lower.

Faith must be tested, because it can be turned into a personal possession only through conflict. What is your faith up against just now?

-Oswald Chambers

This quote comes from my favorite entry in My Utmost For His Highest. It is dated August 29th; however, I see it every morning as it has been posted on my bathroom mirror for over a year.

You would think I wouldn't need it anymore.

However, it is oh so easy to "sink to something lower" any time my faith is challenged. It seems so much more reasonable to worry and fret!

This quote reminds me that I have a reason to thank God for the challenges and uncertainties in life - It turns faith into a personal possession.

My God loves me enough to help me hold my faith as a possession I am sure of, not just a hypothetical feeling. I can't claim to have a quality I've never used.

I think our faith needs to be exercised just like the rest of our body, and it only gets stronger through repetition.

What are you up against right now?

Can you thank God for allowing you to exercise and claim your faith?

Do We Think God Owes Us A Paid-up Electric Bill?

>> Monday, October 19, 2009

Last Friday, a friend shared a video with me that I found to be hilarious. I considered it nothing more than a great laugh for the day and shared it with some friends and social networks. It was a humorous look at how we take for granted the great advances in technology that have occured in such a short time.

Sunday, our class discussed worry. A few people gave their testimony about experiencing a period of time without a job, and how God was faithful in making sure their bills were paid. I think the testimonies were great; just thankful people telling what God has done for them.

Then, this morning, the two experiences above started to merge in my mind. Do we take for granted blessings from God that he is not obligated to give us? Do we think that if we are faithful and we tithe and pray that God is somehow obligated to pay our electric bill?

It is a great feeling when God meets our "needs." However, a good portion of the world would laugh at what we call needs in our prayers and cries to God.

Maybe we should make sure that when we speak of his blessings, we acknowledge that God does not owe us a mortgage payment or electricity.

What if we lose our home and have to move in with extended family. What if we lose everything and our world comes crashing down on us, just like it did for Job?

Is God still good? Did this mean we weren't faithful enough or didn't tithe enough?

Watch the video, then I'll elaborate.

If you are using RSS and need the link to video, Click here

Maybe we should take a minute to realize the miracle of our redemption.

Every day we should be saying:

"Wow! I'm living a redeemed life. I can't even fathom the miracle of a God who would sacrifice so freely for me! I have purpose and I have been called a friend by the God who created the world!"

"Wow! On top of that, I have a house with running water and plumbing and electricity and heat and refridgeration and a dishwasher and a microwave!"

"Thank you God, for blessings above and beyond anything I deserve. I realize that you could ask me to give it all up tomorrow. I have no sacred claim to the comfortable life I live. But today, I just wanted to say thanks."

4182X: My Utmost For His Highest, Classic Edition, Mass Market Paperback My Utmost For His Highest, Classic Edition, Mass Market Paperback

By Oswald Chambers / Barbour Publishing

If you know that you are stuck in a self-centered pity party, no one can kick you out of it faster than Oswald Chambers.

I am in my second year of reading through this book, and I am amazed at how relevant Chambers can be to today's Christian, even in the language of his day.

He is like my personal spiritual trainer.

Let me warn you, Chambers will not be easy on you. Let me give you some examples:

"If you have the whine in you, kick it it out ruthlessly. It is a positive crime to be weak in God's strength."

"God wants you to understand that it is a life of faith, not a life of sentimental enjoyment of His blessing."

"-I can't do that just now, I am praying; it is my hour with God. No, it is your hour with your habit."

"Let God's truth soak into you by soaking in it, not by worrying into it."

"The stamp of the saint is that he can waive his own rights and obey the Lord Jesus."

"The words of the Lord hurt and offend until there is nothing left to hurt or offend. Jesus Christ has not tenderness whatever toward anything that is ultimately going to ruin a man in the service of God."

"The good is always the enemy of the best."

There are 365 days of this joyful training. Before you walk away, let me tell you that Oswald Chambers will also lead you into an intimate walk with God that does not just store up knowledge, but pours out His love:

"You are worth far more to Him now than you were in your days of conscious delight and thrilling testimony."

"Keep at the Source, guard well your belief in Jesus Christ and your relationship to Him, and there will be a steady flow for other lives, no dryness and no deadness."

"God's love to me is inexhaustible, and I must love others from the bedrock of God's love to me."

"Tell God you are ready to be offered, and God will prove Himself to be all you ever dreamed He would be."

There are a lot of "feel-good" Christian devotionals available today, but if you really want to grow, if you really want to allow God to use you to reach beyond yourself, this is the one you should be reading.

The best part? It won't cost you much financially. You can click on the link above and buy the paperback version for $3.99. (The price on the date of this posting).

Does God Exist to Make You Comfortable?

Over the weekend, I purchased my tickets to see Donald Miller and Susan Isaacs in Nashville in November.

If you read my review of A Million Miles In A Thousand Years, you know I'm a Donald Miller fan.

However, I am equally anxious to hear Susan Isaacs speak about her book,
Angry Conversations With God: A Snarky but Authentic Spiritual Memoir.

Susan captures a message that God seems to be trying to hammer into our comfortable middle-class lives today.

026752: Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently

By Marcus Buckingham / Thomas Nelson

I was very skeptical when I first saw this book. Who was this sleek-looking guy telling women how to be happy and successful? Is this a message that a Christian woman would even take seriously? It looked like a catchy money-making scam to me.

I'm glad that I decided to read it. I was touched by the very high level of respect that Marcus has for women, and the deep understanding he has of the conflicts that we face.

This book was very refreshing. No assumptions, no myths, no checklist on how to "balance" your life. This is a researched, honest look at how to find our God-given strengths and use that information to approach decisions in our life.

Women are discovering that "balance" is a myth and a burden. Marcus gives direction on how to "intentionally imbalance" our lives and be confident in those decisions. He gives a new definition to "having it all."

If you ever struggle in navigating all of the choices available to women today, I would definitely recommend reading this book.

to buy it today.

Here is the video trailer. My favorite part is Marcus' description of the myth of juggling:

The Tragedy of Unoffered Prayer

>> Thursday, October 1, 2009

<"The great tragedy of life is not unanswered prayer but unoffered prayer."

-F.B. Meyer
(taken from
Every Child Needs a Praying Mom
by Fern Nichols)

Why is it that when we announce a chocolate fountain and door prizes, women flock to the event, but when we announce that we will be gathering together for an hour to pray for our children, few women can be found?

Sometimes I think I need a translator to check my language, because I swear that women instead hear me say I am seeking them out to take them to the dentist.

It is intimidating to pray. But there is a reason for that.

Prayer is battle.

When your children are the "territory at stake," should intimidation keep you from fighting?

The October issue of the Tabitha's Team News, Women in Prayer was sent out this morning. Did you miss it?
