Dressing Up God to Make the Sale

>> Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Only in the West has the heretical notion that God will protect us from all harm really taken root.

-Mike Erre, The Jesus of Suburbia

I worked in sales in various industries for over 12 years. I have seen my fair share of people embellishing the truth to make a sale.

However, nothing embarrasses me more than when we embellish, tame, or "dress up" Jesus to sell him to our neighbor.

I don't think it is always intentional. We have let this idea creep into our culture that we become Christians to get a better life.

Don't misunderstand me; there is no greater joy than knowing Jesus as your savior. But joy and comfort are not the same thing.

We should never tell our neighbor that their life will get better if they will just trust Jesus. It is more likely that the opposite is true; Satan does need to pay much attention to you until you decide to exercise faith.

Jesus is good enough without our sales talk - no, he is perfect.

He may not take away all of your troubles, but he will stand by you and give you strength and hope. He will walk with you through every step.

When we realize the greatness of our redemption and how big our God really is, anything that comes our way is seen with new perspective.

Life may not get easier, but we will know that our broken relationship with God is now fixed. The guilt that we once had and did not understand is replaced with grace and love.

That is the reason we give our lives to Jesus.
