Do We Think God Owes Us A Paid-up Electric Bill?
>> Monday, October 19, 2009
Last Friday, a friend shared a video with me that I found to be hilarious. I considered it nothing more than a great laugh for the day and shared it with some friends and social networks. It was a humorous look at how we take for granted the great advances in technology that have occured in such a short time.
Sunday, our class discussed worry. A few people gave their testimony about experiencing a period of time without a job, and how God was faithful in making sure their bills were paid. I think the testimonies were great; just thankful people telling what God has done for them.
Then, this morning, the two experiences above started to merge in my mind. Do we take for granted blessings from God that he is not obligated to give us? Do we think that if we are faithful and we tithe and pray that God is somehow obligated to pay our electric bill?
It is a great feeling when God meets our "needs." However, a good portion of the world would laugh at what we call needs in our prayers and cries to God.
Maybe we should make sure that when we speak of his blessings, we acknowledge that God does not owe us a mortgage payment or electricity.
What if we lose our home and have to move in with extended family. What if we lose everything and our world comes crashing down on us, just like it did for Job?
Is God still good? Did this mean we weren't faithful enough or didn't tithe enough?
Watch the video, then I'll elaborate.

Maybe we should take a minute to realize the miracle of our redemption.
Every day we should be saying:
"Wow! I'm living a redeemed life. I can't even fathom the miracle of a God who would sacrifice so freely for me! I have purpose and I have been called a friend by the God who created the world!"
"Wow! On top of that, I have a house with running water and plumbing and electricity and heat and refridgeration and a dishwasher and a microwave!"
"Thank you God, for blessings above and beyond anything I deserve. I realize that you could ask me to give it all up tomorrow. I have no sacred claim to the comfortable life I live. But today, I just wanted to say thanks."

A hard truth, but very true. My children were without water for the past five days. Now the water is on, but the hot water heater will not heat, but we have laughed and talked and played and loved each other for each of these days. All I can control is my praise, worship, and fellowship with God. The rest is up to God. I love God, and I thank God.
Thanks for sharing! Those will be memorable moments they will learn from.
I visted your blog - what a great looking family! You are such a great mom setting a great example with your faith.
